Japanese Animation
Japanese comic books are known as Manga, and animations as Anime. Manga is an old Japanese art form, and can be traced back to the thirteenth century. Today the most successful Manga comic book, Shukan Shonen Jump, sells up to 6 million copies a week, making it the biggest selling magazine in the world!
Today Manga and Anime are watched by both adults and children. While short Anime such as Flint The Time Detective are similar to western cartoons, Anime films are far more distinctive.
These films use a wider variety of themes and characters than most western cartoons. This might explain why directors like Hayao Miyazaki - who has made films such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away (the most successful film in Japanese history) - are so highly regarded.
