About Neon Genesis Evangelion
Brief Synopsis
In A.D. 2000, a huge meteorite drops in Antartica and the most devastating disaster since the existence of mankind, the "Second Impact", occurs. Elevation of the sea level, natural catastrophe, economic crisis, racial conflict, and ecetera surmounted to destroy the mankind. The world population dwindled.
15 years later, when the world was just beginning to recover to its former condition, another huge crisis strikes the earth. And that was the "angels". (or, "Shito" in Japanese.)
The angels make their appearance one by one. Are they truly the messengers of God?
To resist their attack, the world develops a biochemical weapon, or a robot, called "Evangelion". In the year 2015, three Evangelions are activated and three different boys and girls are chosen as the pilots.
The battle has begun for them. It is up to these three young pilots that the fate of mankind will be decided.

My Opinion
Unlike its usual setting, this Anime has a very philosophical undertone. In this world in the brink of destruction, mankind still clings on to life with very little hope. The hero, Shinji (left), does not care about anything. Neglected by his own father, he feels abandoned by the whole world, and considers himself as leading an unimportant life. He longs to die, yet he is not brave enough to kill himself. But he slowly begins to change - toward a more wholesome human being. Yet his desire is crushed by human limitations. In dealing with deep metaphysical and religious themes, it brings out the baffling questions of "why do we live", "where do we go", "where do we come from", and "where are we going?"
Apart from this complicated scientific background, it also contains a strong drama. The three pilots need each other, though they deny. They cannot stand alone, and it is only when they are together that they are one complete human being.
This Anime is a must see for those who are tired of corny humour and pisstake dramas. It will stimulate all of you to a degree where you will begin to think "what have I been watching so far?"
Give it a try and if you don't like it, say you don't. But if you like it, be honest and say "Yeah, it is one of the best I've ever seen."

Rei Ayanami
Designated pilot of Evangelion Unit 00. Rei has been undergoing special training since the Evangelion Development Project began. She suffered serious injuries that occurred during a re-activation testing.
Rei is a girl of a few words and has considerable difficulty in expressing emotion.

 |
Asuka Langley Soryu
Designated pilot of Evangelion Unit 02. Like Rei Ayanami, Asuka has undergone special training. She is three-quarters German and one-quarter Japanese. Born and raised in the United States, Asuka hates to lose at anything. She is referred to as The Second Child (The Second Qualifier).
As the series develops, we find out that Asuka's outside personality was meant to mask her own true feelings about herself, her family and everyone around her. Within her, Asuka feels almost the same way as Shinji: lonely.
